uterus
(Science: anatomy) The hollow muscular organ in female mammals in which the fertilized ovum normally becomes embedded and in which the developing embryo and foetus is nourished.

The uterus measures about 7.5 cm. in length, 5 cm. in breadth, at its upper part, and nearly 2.5 cm. in thickness; it weighs from 30 to 40 gm. It is divisible into two portions.

uterus (womb)The portion of female mammals' reproductive tract in which the embryo develops.
utilitarian conservation A philosophy that resources should be used for the greatest good for the greatest number for the longest time.

The uterus has an inner layer, the endometrium, in which a fertilized egg implants. At the lower end of the uterus the cervix connects the uterus to the vagina. The vagina receives the penis during intercourse and serves as the birth canal.

The blastocyst is the embryonic stage that implants in the wall of the uterus. [human] BlastulaEarly stage of animal development in which a single (usually) layer of cells surrounds a fluid-filled cavity (the blastocoel), thus forming a hollow ball.

In mammals, a tissue formed within the uterus through which nutrients are passed from the mother to the embryo (and later the fetus) and its wastes are removed. It is analogous to the protective membranes in the egg of other amniotes.

When it reaches the uterus (womb) 6 or 7 days after fertilization, it embeds (implants) in the uterine lining (endometrium).

(Ex utero means "outside the uterus.") The testing is done after eggs and sperm have been mixed together using in vitro fertilization.

Type of placenta where the lining of the uterus is shed along with the placenta, after birth has taken place. This is due to the extensive penetration of the chorionic villi into the endometrium.

ectopic pregnancy - implantation of the embryo in the oviduct or other site outside the uterus typically caused by failure of zona pellucida to keep blastocyst from adhering to oviduct walls; ...

A prenatal diagnostic procedure in which X-ray of the mother's uterus, after injection of a radiopaque substance, allows visualization of the fetus, the placenta, and the uterine lining. This may be used to confirm a diagnosis of neural tube defects.

A prenatal test in which a hollow needle is inserted into the uterus to obtain some of the fluid surrounding a foetus (baby). The cells are examined to determine the sex of the baby, or to find abnormalities in the chromosomes.

Female mice that develop in the uterus between two males have shorter fertile periods than do females that develop between two females. Male mice prefer to mate with the females that develop in an all-female environment.

Obesity is associated with cancer, particularly those of the colon, breast, and uterus. The risk of cancer is 55% greater in obese women and 33% greater in obese men.

It takes about 6 days for the fertilized egg to move through the Fallopian tube and implant itself into the lining of the uterus where it will develop for 9 months. For further information, please review the Human Reproduction problem set.

Congenital conditions are those present from birth. Birth defects are described as being congenital. They can be caused by a genetic mutation, an unfavorable environment in the uterus, or a combination of both factors.

Progestagen A class of steroid hormone, exemplified by progesterone, that prepares the uterus for implantation of the ovum; synthesized by the corpus luteum of the ovary.
