Vacuoles are found in the cytoplasm of most plant cells and some animal cells. Vacuoles are membrane-bound compartments within some eukaryotic cells that can serve a variety of secretory, excretory, and storage functions.

Vacuole
[L. vacuus - empty; L. -ole - diminutive ending]. In a cell, a membrane bound compartment separating material from the cytoplasm.

Vacuoles in plant cells: the central vacuole
Most mature plant cells have a central vacuole, which often takes up more than 80% of the cell interior. It is surrounded by a membrane, called the tonoplast.

Vacuoles are membrane-bound organelles that can be found in both animals and plants. In a way, they're specialized lysosomes.

Vacuoles are membranous sacs similar to, but larger than vesicles.
Vacuoles store water and dissolved substances.
They are more important in plant cells. Most of the center of a plant cell is occupied by a central vacuole.

The Plant Cell
Plant cells are eukaryotic and have many of the structures found in animal cells. Link to pages describing these.

vacuole A membrane-bounded, fluid-filled space in a cell.
vagabond's disease Darkened, thickened skin caused by years of infestation with body lice, Pediculus humanus humanus.

vacuole (L. diminutive of vacuus, empty) A cavity in a plant cell, bounded by a membrane; in which various plant products and by-products are stored.

vacuole
[L. vacuus, empty]
A membrane-enclosed sac taking up most of the interior of a mature plant cell and containing a variety of substances important in plant reproduction, growth, and development.

vacuole -- Membrane-bound fluid-filled space within a cell. In most plant cells, there is a single large vacuole filling most of the cell's volume. Some bacterial cells contain gas vacuoles.

cell vacuole
a membrane-bound sac that is found in many cells, normally acting as a storage organ of various types. A large central vacuole is a particular feature of many plant cells, where it can occupy 80-90% of the total cell volume.

Plant cells have a central vacuole which contains water but the vacuole can also store ions, pigments, and other molecules. Plant cells also have a cell wall often composed of cellulose but it can contain other molecules.
