variety. An identifiable strain within a species, usually referring to a strain which arises in nature as opposed to a cultivar which is specifically bred for particular properties; sometimes used synonymously with cultivar.

variety - a group of individuals within a species that differs in certain characters from other groups of the species, e.g. plants in a species that differ in form, color, fruit size, fruit flavor, etc. (Glossary of PM). Can occur naturally.

Diversity: the variety of living organisms
A phylogenetic tree of all living things, based on rRNA gene data, showing the separation of the three domains bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes as described initially by Carl Woese.

Initially, a wide variety of observations seemed to be consistent with the neutral theory. Eventually, however, several lines of evidence toppled it. There is less variation in natural populations than the neutral theory predicts.

However, because of variety, some bacteria may survive your medicine. Not enough bacteria survive to hurt you now, but they are there. If they eventually get someone sick, there is a chance that the antibiotics will not work again.
