Biology WeedWestern blotting

Western blot
A technique for detecting specific proteins using an antibody. Proteins are separated by electrophoresis in an acrylamide gel (PAGE), and transferred onto a membrane. The membrane is then probed with an antibody.

Whereas ELISA measures antibody to whole virus and gives a "positive," "negative" or indeterminate test result, Western blotting is a more specific test.

Western Blot
Western blotting is a laboratory technique used to detect a specific protein in a blood or tissue sample. The method involves using gel electrophoresis to separate the sample's proteins.

Western blot
Transfer of proteins from an acrylamide gel onto a membrane filter for the detection with specific antibodies.

Western blot (see blot) Also known as Immunoblot. Proteins blotted onto a membrane post electrophoresis. They can be detected there by appropriate antisera. The name Western blot is a continuation of the Southern blot, Northern blot joke.

Western blot A technique used to identify and locate proteins based on their ability to bind to specific antibodies.

Main article: western blot
Antibodies to most proteins can be created by injecting small amounts of the protein into an animal such as a mouse, rabbit, sheep, ...

Western blotting
Technique for detecting and identifying trace quantities of protein after they have been separated by gel electrophoresis and transferred to a membrane.

WESTERN BLOT - Proteins are separated by SDS-PAGE, then electrophoretically transferred to a solid-phase matrix such as nitrocellulose, then probed with a labelled antibody (or a series of antibodies) ...

Western blot: A technique for analyzing mixtures of proteins to show the presence, size and abundance of one particular type of protein.

Once monoclonal antibodies for a given substance have been produced, they can be used to detect for the presence and quantity of this substance, for instance in a Western blot test (to detect a substance in a solution) or an immunofluorescence test ...

If there are any protein/molecules that bind to the first protein, they will also be pelleted. Identification of proteins in the pellet can be determined by western blot (if an antibody exist) or by sequencing a purified protein band.

The number of repeats varies between individuals and is used as a basis for genetic identification.
Western Blot Protein blot taken from an electrophoresis gel. Normally probed with a specific antibody.

Western blotting analysis -- a technique used to identify a specific protein; the probe is a radioactively labeled antibody raised against the protein in question.
