X chromosome
The X chromosome is one of the two sex chromosomes in humans and other animals (the other is the Y chromosome). It is a part of the XY sex-determination system.

Sex Chromosome
A sex chromosome is a type of chromosome that participates in sex determination. Humans and most other mammals have two sex chromosomes, the X and the Y.

X chromosome A chromosome which is present in two copies in the genome of normal human females but in only one copy in normal males.
X inactivation The random inactivation of all but one X chromosome in most cells. See Barr body.

X chromosome One of the two sex chromosomes, X and Y.

Sex Chromosome Abnormalities
Aneuploidy involving the X and Y chromosomes is more common in humans since the results are less devastating than autosomal aneuploidies.

Sex chromosome
A sex chromosome is one of the two chromosomes that specify an organism's genetic sex. Humans have two kinds of sex chromosomes, one called X and the other Y.

Sex chromosome
The X or Y chromosome in human beings that determines the sex of an individual. Females have two X chromosomes in diploid cells; males have an X and a Y chromosome.

The X Chromosome
The X chromosome carries hundreds of genes but few, if any, of these have anything to do directly with sex. However, the inheritance of these genes follows special rules. These arise because: ...

One X chromosome is inactivated in females by producing a tightly-wound structure called a Barr body.
Example: Lampbrush Chromosomes ...

The dominant X chromosome is represented as XR.
The recessive chromosome is represented as Xr.
Since males have only one X-chromosome, if this chromosome has the red-green color blind allele, the males will have the color perception defect.

Of these, 22 are autosomes and 1 is a sex chromosome.
Clones A group of cells derived from a single ancestor.
Cloning The process of asexually producing a group of cells (clones), all genetically identical, from a single ancestor.

In at least one species, two of their opsin genes are (like our mid- and long- wave sensitive opsins) on the X chromosome.

Morgan hypothesized that the gene for eye color was only on the X chromosome, specifically in that region of the X that had no corresponding region on the Y.

A term coined by Montgomery (1906) for the chromosome not involved in sex determination; a chromosome other than a sex chromosome.

A genetic disease caused by a mutation on the X chromosome. In X-linked recessive conditions, a normal female "carrier" passes on the mutated X chromosome to an affected son. X-ray crystallography.

Dosage compensation: The phenomenon in women, who have two copies of genes on the X chromosome, of having the same level of the products of those genes as males (who have a single X chromosome).

The hypothesis, named after Mary Lyon who stated it, suggesting that doseage compensation in mammals is by inactivation of all but one X chromosome in cells with more than one X chromosome.

Barr body A heterochromatic X chromosome usually found in the nucleus of female mammals.
barrier island A long and narrow island that is built by waves along the coast.

X-linked disease. A genetic disease caused by a mutation on the X chromosome. In X-linked recessive conditions, a normal female "carrier" passes on the mutated X chromosome to an affected son.

sex linkage The condition in which the inheritance of a sex chromosome is coupled with that of a given gene; e.g., red-green color blindness and hemophilia in humans. Traits located on the X-chromosome.

An inherited trait, such as color discrimination, determined by a gene located on a sex chromosome and that therefore shows a different pattern of inheritance in males and females.
