Zona pellucida
[L. zona - a girdle; L. pellucidus - to shine through]. A translucent non-cellular membrane surrounding a mammalian egg through which sperm must penetrate in order for fertilization to occur.

zona pellucida - a thick extracellular matrix surrounding the mammalian ovum (egg) which binds sperm and initiates the acrosome reaction of the sperm.

Fertilization begins with the binding of a sperm head to the outer coating of the egg (called the zona pellucida).

"The zona striata or zona pellucida (Fig. 3) is a thick membrane, which, under the higher powers of the microscope, is seen to be radially striated.

When the sperm comes in contact with ZP3 in the zona pellucida, this reaction takes place, during which actin polymerizes to form the acrosomal process; also, the acrosomal vesicle fuses with the plasma membrane of the egg cell, ...

Drell's past research has been in transplantation immunogenetics and tolerance and hybridoma production to a variety of antigens, including early mouse embryonic antigens, rabbit zona pellucida antigens, and antigens of human tumors.
