Aids to Navigation System (ATON)
Buoys and markers are the “traffic signals' that guide vessel operators safely along some waterways. They also identify dangerous or controlled areas and give directions and information.

 


AIDS TO NAVIGATION: Artificial objects external to the boat, that supplement natural landmarks, assisting safe passage by indicating safe and unsafe waters.

Aids to Navigation
Aids to navigation are devices (buoys) or systems (collision regulations), that are external to the pleasure craft. They are provided to help the operator of a pleasure craft determine position and course.

Aids To Navigation (ATONs) : Along your way you may be able to find several types of navigation aids to assist you in avoiding dangers and shoals along with helping you to determine your position.

Aids to navigation found on federal waters, commonly known as buoys or channel markers, are designed, built and maintained by the United States Coast Guard.

Other buoys used as aids to navigation indicate dangers, the centers and intersections of channels, anchorages, danger areas, etc. In addition, the horseshoe buoy is a personal flotation device (PFD).

Lateral System - A system of aids to navigation in which characteristics of buoys and beacons indicate the sides of the channel or route relative to a conventional direction of buoyage (usually upstream).

Lights: Lighthouses or beacons; fixed aids to navigation that are equipped with light sources having certain prescribed characteristics.

A flashing light is used only on air-cushion vehicles and is yellow. The flash charcteristic was chosen to distinguish the light from the slower flashing of many lighted aids to navigation (buoys and markers).
