anchor watch - A watch kept constantly on deck when a ship is at anchor, to be ready to veer out or take in chain, or to slip, make sail, give warning to the hands below, etc., if the vessel be in danger of collision or other mishaps.

Anchor Watch:
A member or members of the crew that keep watch and check to see whether the anchor is dragging and the the drift of the ship. This is prudent when anchored in heavy weather, or where wind direction may change dangerously.

Anchor watch - Making sure that the anchor is holding and the vessel is not drifting. Important during rough weather and at night. Most marine GPS units have an Anchor Watch alarm capability.

The crew moaned when I announced that anchor watches would be necessary, given the strong winds. Halfway through dinner I suddenly felt a draft blowing through the main companionway; something was wrong-we were dragging anchor! ...

If your boat has the appropriate equipment, you can set up an anchor watch with the GPS, to be aware of the situation early.

To buoy the anchor is to attach a buoy to is so it and its rode can be found if they must be abandoned. The anchor watch is the crew awake and on deck as lookouts while the boat is anchored. See straight up an down and swinging room.
