barometer
An instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure, usually measured in inches of mercury or millibars. Inches of mercury are used because some barometers use the height of mercury in a sealed tube as a measuring device.

An instrument that displays atmospheric pressure in inches or millibars and therefore is useful in predicting weather. A barograph (recording barometer) records barometric readings over several days.

Batten - a short piece of wood or plastic inserted in a sail to keep it taut
Batten pockets-- Pockets in a sail where battens can be placed to stiffen the sail.

The denser air exerted higher pressure in the atmosphere reflected in a rising reading on a barometer. The reverse is true of warm air following a cold air mass.

Another fun way to check the weather is to learn how to read a barometer, when it falls rapidly, wet weather or a storm is coming. A rising barometer indicates fair weather or clearing weather.
