Bear Off: Turn away from the wind.
Beating: See tacking.
Bilge: The area in the lower part of the hull where water collects, also the part of the hull where the bottom turns into the side, the "turn of the bilge".

 


bear off - To turn leeward; To turn away from the wind; also known as "to bear away."
beat or beating - Sailing against the wind, in frequent and alternate tacks to create a zig-zag course.

a) bear off before the opposing boat has a chance to catch up to you, or
b) tack immediately.
Do not try both tactics, but rather choose one and see it through.

Bear Down
To approach something from upwind.

Bear Away, Bear Off
To fall off. A boat falls off the wind when it points its bow further from the eye of the wind. The opposite of heading up.

Bearing: The direction of an object expressed either as a true bearing as shown on the chart, or as a bearing relative to the heading of the boat.

Bear Away, Bear Off:
To turn the boat away from the wind. Also, Fall Off. The opposite of heading up.

BEAR OFF - Steer away from the wind, shore or any object.
BEARING - the angular direction in which an object is observed with respect to a reference direction or another object.
BELAY - Secure a line without a knot or hitch.

Change course downwind, or away from the wind's direction.

Once the bows are on the other side of the wind, bear off a little more than necessary until you get your original speed back.
Get back on course once you have re-established you speed.
Anchoring ...

When it gets light or you want to bear off you will need to roll up the small jib and go with the genoa. You would need to roll up that genoa in order to tack it with any panache.

And I was profoundly grateful when we were able to bear off to starboard and run into the still water back of Orleans. Perhaps that midnight cup of coffee did not taste well! Its heat ran through my chilled veins like Chartreuse. I can taste it yet ! ...
