BEATING TO WINDWARD
- CHAPTER X
THERE IS an old nautical truism to the effect that a haystack will sail well to leeward, but that it takes a correctly modeled vessel to beat to windward.

Beating: Sailing (or pointing) at an angle into the wind or upwind. Since sailboats cannot sail directly into the wind, "beating" is the closet course to the wind they can sail.

Beating: See tacking.
Bilge: The area in the lower part of the hull where water collects, also the part of the hull where the bottom turns into the side, the "turn of the bilge".
Block: Known on land as a pulley.

beating to windward
to sail to windward close-hauled, tacking as you go, to reach an objective to windward.

beating
Sailing upwind.
berth
A place to sleep aboard a boat. Also, a boat slip.

beating - Tacking. To sail against the wind by sailing on alternate tacks (directions).

Beat / Beating:
To sail towards the direction from which the wind blows by making a series of tacks. A point of sail also known as sailing close hauled.

beat or beating - Sailing against the wind, in frequent and alternate tacks to create a zig-zag course.

Beating, the boat sailed best with the jib eased to give some curve to the foot. Sheeting the main and the jib tight will get it closer to the wind, but you will also go much slower.

beat (also) beating
To sail towards the wind by making a series of tacks. -Sailing close hauled.

close-hauled, beating, on the wind
The point of sail on which the boat sails as close to the wind as possible, with sails trimmed tight.

beating: sailing against the wind by tacking (close hauled, on the wind): sailing toward the wind source, or against the wind, with the sails pulled in all the way, tacking as you go, to reach a destination upwind.

Daggerboard: A type of light centerboard that is lifted vertically; often in pairs, with the leeward one lowered when beating.
Davy Jones' Locker: An idiom for the bottom of the sea.

Beating (Close Hauled, On the Wind): Sailing toward the wind source, or against the wind, with the sails pulled in all the way, tacking as you go, to reach a destination upwind.

or sliding keel formed of a broad board or slab of wood or metal which may be raised into a water-tight case amidships, when in shallow water, or may be lowered to increase the area of lateral resistance and prevent leeway when the vessel is beating ...

The fourth point was that when a boat is reaching or beating, the apparent wind is of greater velocity than the true wind. You are, in effect, "making your own wind." In iceboating this is an important part of the resulting high speeds.

It is the principal power on a modern racing sloop when beating. Also called a jenny gimbal 1. A device that suspends a compass so that it remains level; 2.

- In Example 1, S is close-hauled beating to a windward mark. P has rounded the mark and is sailing downwind on the next leg. P must keep clear of S and so must adjust her course to avoid S.

Let's say you've been beating hard upwind for quite a while on a port tack in 4 to 6ft. seas, no reef on your sails, the wind is about 16kts. You're the only one on board to be able to steer and you want to take a break.

If a crewman is standing watch on the weather side of the bow, he will be subject to the constant beating of the sea and the ocean spray. He will be under the weather.
Overreach - ...

Here the sailboat is sailing close hauled, or as close to the wind direction it can. Most boats can sail within about 45 to 50 degrees of the wind direction. (No boat can sail directly into the wind.) Close hauled is also called beating.

tack -- change the sail course by bringing its bow across the wind, moving the boom to the other side of the boat when beating
