Bilge pump
A mechanical, electrical, or manually operated pump used to remove water from the bilge.
Bimini
A cover used to shelter the cockpit from the sun.

 


The Bilge Pump: The bilge is the lowest part of the boat. A bilge pump (red arrow in picture on the right) intermittently removes this water. The pump's switch on the boat's electrical panel should be set on automatic.

Manual bilge pump in cockpit and below as backup to the automatic bilge pump. Ability to manually empty the bilges from the cockpit.

Bilge Pump - A pump to draw the bilge water from the gold of a ship.
Bilge Water - Water which collects in the bilge or bottom of a ship or other vessel. It is often allowed to remain till it becomes very offensive.

The development of bilge pumps went from buckets, to hand pumps, and now electric bilge pumps are available for even small vessels. Bilge coatings are applied to protect the surfaces.

BILGE PUMP: An electric or manual pumping device to rid the bilge of any unwanted water. Having both is recommended.
BIMINI: Cover or roof to protect crew from sun and adverse weather on the bridge or in the cockpit the boat.

Water is removed by a hand-operated manual bilge pump or by an electric bilge pump activated by hand or by a float switch, an electric switch triggered by the rise of a small buoy in the bilge.

Inspect and clear scuppers, garboard drain, other drains and bilge pump discharge.
Apply a coat of good quality marine wax.
Clean and polish all metal.
Clean and inspect canvas, covers and bimini top.

A strainer in the bilge so that the bilge pump doesn't get clogged.
Stuffing Box
A fitting around the propeller shaft to keep the bearing lubricated and to keep water out of the boat.

Bilge - The lowest part of a vessel's interior hull. You will, of course, employ a bilge pump to rid the bilge of water. Occasionally, you might hear someone described as being full of bilge. It is not a compliment.

tested the Lugger's buoyancy by swamping the boat until it was down on its marks a foot or so, where it remained surprisingly stable and showed no signs of settling any further. Afterward I was able to pump the boat dry with the built-in bilge pump.
