Boat Parts
The most basic terms in boating are those used to describe parts and directions on the boat. Most of these don't have or need mnemonics.

Boat Speed:
Speed through the water, not "over ground".

Boat
A boat is a watercraft designed to float or plane on water, and provide transport over it. Usually this water will be inland (lakes) or in protected coastal areas.

Basic boat terms
Certain basic boating terms apply specifically to boats equipped with one or more engines-whether inboard (mounted within the hull), outboard (mounted on the transom and detachable), or the combination inboard-outboard (1/0) type.

Sport Boat
When rating rules were in a state of flux and one-design racing was on the rise we had sailors looking for the thrills of one-design dinghy sailing combined with the stability of a keelboat.

Boat rudders may be either outboard or inboard. Outboard rudders are hung on the stern or transom.

Boats are unique--part living being and part object. Because the balance is unclear, the naming of boats is disputed territory.

Working the Boat
You should never stop working the boat from the time the starting gun goes until the end of the race. You should keep working the mainsheet, steering over waves and moving your body to keep the boat flat.

Beam: A boat's greatest width.
Beating: Sailing (or pointing) at an angle into the wind or upwind. Since sailboats cannot sail directly into the wind, "beating" is the closet course to the wind they can sail.
