Boatswain (bosun): the highest unlicensed rating in the deck department who has immediate charge of all deck hands and who in turn comes under the direct orders of the master or chief mate or mate.

Pipe (Bos'n's), or a Bos'n's Call - A whistle used by Boatswains (bosuns or bos'ns) to issue commands. Consisting of a metal tube which directs the breath over an aperture on the top of a hollow ball to produce high pitched notes.

Bolt rope: A line rope: sewn into the luff of a sail. The bolt rope fits in a notch in the mast or other spar when the sail is raised.
