Breast line - a docking line going at approximately a right angle from the boat to the dock
Broach - to spin out of control, either causing or nearly causing a capsize.

 


breast line - A line attached laterally from a boat to a dock, preventing movement away from the dock.

breast line - A lateral mooring/dock line from a boat to a pier; as distinguished from a spring line.

- Breast Lines — Larger and heavier boats use the same lines mentioned above, but can use relatively short lines that connect direct from a boat cleat to the nearest cleat directly across on the dock.

Capsize - turn upside down or (what increases as your boat gets nicer.) ...

The simplest consists of one amidships breast line, quickly cleated. Remove it as soon as you have your longer lines positioned and adjusted.

Tie up to the dock with bowlines and sternlines either lateral, as "breast lines" (as shown below) or angled out more ahead and astern. Two Half Hitches On the Bight is a good knot for securing to the dock.

Wire, manila, or nylon rope used to secure a ship; named from forward aft: number one bow line, number two after bow spring, number three forward bow spring, number four breast line, number five after quarter spring, number 6 forward quarter spring, ...

Again, the details matter, the new 37 comes standard with heavy-duty amidship cleats that not only are essential for setting spring lines, but also for running a quick breast line when docking maneuvers go askew.

Dockage is the fee charged for docking, which may be supervised by a dockmaster. A docking line (dockline) is a line used to tie a boat to another object. See breast line, springline.
