broach to - An undesirable position in which a vessel is turned to expose its side to the oncoming waves.

 


Broach to -- To come to against wind and helm.
Capsize -- To turn over.
Carvel built -- Constructed with the planks flush edge to edge and the seams caulked and payed.

broad on the beam - At a right angle (90 degrees) to a vessel.

BROACH TO - To fall off so much, when going free, as to bring the vessel nearly broadside on to the wind.
BULKHEAD - A vertical partition separating compartments.
