Boating Cardinal pointsCarrick bend

Carlins: Fore and aft members of the deck frame; they support the coamings of the cockpit, the cabin trunk sides and the hatch coamings.
Carrick Bend: A useful knot for fastening two lines together; a number of variations exist.

carlins - Structural pieces running fore and aft between the beams.
carrick bend - A knot used to tie two lines together.

carlins or carlenes - Aft and fore members of the deck frame; boat feature that supports the cabin trunk, the hatch coamings and the cockpit coamings.
carrick bend - A knot used to fasten multiple lines together.

The deck plating is laid over metal beams and carlins and tacked temporarily in place. The difficulty in metal construction is avoiding distortion of the plate while welding due to the high heat involved in the process.
