compass error
Magnetic deviation. The difference between the reading of a compass and the actual magnetic course or bearing due to errors in the compass reading.

Compass Error:
The amount the compass is deflected from the true direction by variation (magnetic) and deviation (metallic influences) together ...

Compass error. The difference between the reading of a compass and the actual magnetic course or bearing due to errors in the compass reading. These errors can be caused by metals, magnetic fields and electrical fields near the compass.

Compass error is an inaccuracy in a compass due to maladjustment or to compass deviation, the effect of metal objects on board. Error can be removed or compensated. A compass adjuster is a technician who corrects or compensates compass error.

Deviation: Compass error caused magnetic disturbance
Dockline: A line used to secure a boat to a dock.
Draft: Water depth required to float the vessel.

Deviation- Compass error caused by local magnetic attraction.
Dinghy- A small boat fitted with oars and sometimes sails.
Dismast- To remove a mast or masts. To lose a mast or masts at sea.

COMPASS ERROR - Combined effect of variation and deviation.
COURSE - Intended direction for a boat to be steered.
DECK - Horizontal covering resting on the deck beams of a vessel, the floor of any compartment.

The distance due east or due west made by a boat on its course depth (of hull) Measurement inside the hull from the underside of the deck to the top of the keel derelict An abandoned ship deviation Compass error produced by magnetic ...

magnetic deviation - Compass error. The difference between the reading of a compass and the actual magnetic course or bearing due to errors in the compass reading.

deviation: compass error produced by magnetic disturbances aboard ship. dinghy: small open boat for sailing, rowing, etc. a small open boat, usually carried aboard a yacht for going ashore.

flinders bar - A soft iron bar, in/on the binnacle; used to compensate for compass error (resulting from vertical magnetism in a steel-hulled vessel).

If the deviation was 20° East and the variation 10° West, the difference between them would be 10° East, which compass error should be applied to the right to steer a true course.

True Bearing - Bearing relative to true north; compass bearing corrected for compass error.
True Heading - Heading relative to true north.

This card rests upon a pivot centered in the compass bowl, which in its turn is suspended by gimbals in the binnacle or stand, the latter having means for lighting the card at night and for adjustment of compass errors due to magnetism of the ship.
