COMPASS ROSE: The resulting figure when the complete 360° directional system is developed as a circle with each degree graduated upon it, and with the 000° indicated as True North. True North is also known as true rose.

compass rose: two concentric circles, each divided into 360 degrees or 32 points, printed on nautical charts and used for laying off courses or bearings. The outer circle is graduated in degrees true, the inner circle is degrees magnetic.

The compass rose on a chart usually shows both true and magnetic directions. A compass protractor is a navigational plotter with a compass rose that orients it to the chart. See lubber's line and made good.

To determine the direction of travel use the parallel ruler and the chart's compass rose. Walk the ruler for the track to the compass rose and read the direction in degrees True North or degrees Magnetic North.

A navigational tool used to move a line on a chart from one location to another without changing its angle, such as when moving a plotted course to a compass rose.

You can take magnetic bearings to distant objects to establish a LOP by sighting over the top of the compass and reading the bearing in that direction. Be sure to use the magnetic compass rose on the chart.

TURNBUCKLE - A threaded, adjustable rigging fitting, used for stays, lifelines and sometimes other rigging.
