cutter: a sailboat with one mast stepped more than one third of the way aft, capable of carrying two or more sails ahead of the mast; also, a Coast Guard boat. dinghy: small open boat for sailing, rowing, etc.

 


Cutter Rig - sometimes called a Cutter Rigged Sloop, is rigged for two sails forward of the single mast and one sail aft. The forward sail is called the Yankee, the inner forward sail is called the Staysail.

Cutter. One mast, stepped at a point about two-fifths of the waterline length from the bow.
Yawl. Two masts, a tall mainmast and a short mizzenmast stepped behind the rudder post.

An important point with cutters and most double-headsail rigs is that running backstays are required to properly tension the staysail stay.

DAGGERBOARD A blade shaped centerboard that is lifted out of a case when raised. Usually only suitable for small boats.

This is a simple cutter rig. Some might argue that the mast location forward makes this really a sloop with a staysail but let's call it a cutter. The staysail hounds are high and the foot of the staysail is long, giving it good proportions.

Cutter: similar to a sloop in that there is only one mast, but it is stepped further aft and she can carry two headsails at once (forestaysail and jib). Often has a bowsprit to enlarge the foretriangle.

Some consideration should be given to designing a cable cutter that can be permanently affixed to standard A, B, or E reels. This device must be capable of cutting the cable quickly and cleanly with one smooth single- handed motion.

The double-headsail (double-head, cutter) rig has two stays, the headstay and the forestay (running aloft inside the headstay). Of the two jibs, the one on the headstay is the jib, the one on the forestay the forestaysail (staysail).

If the weather is bad, maybe a helo or a larger cutter. If a rescue swimmer had to get in the water to get everyone out of a life raft, that swimmer would want to know what to expect. Should they send out a C130 to find you first?
