Soundings are depth measurements. On soundings is an area of water relatively near shore and shallow enough to be sounded, generally inside the 100-fathom line. Off soundings is far offshore, beyond the 100-fathom line. See fathom.

Choice of chain and rope size is also difficult. As an example, for a 30ff sailing yacht, I would use 6 fathoms of 5/1 6in chain and 1ins or 2ins circum. nylon warp (about 30 fathoms) for coastal cruising.

If you approach a coastline from offshore sailing, set up a bearing on a fixed object--such as the lighthouse--at the same time monitoring your depth. Notice the point at which it crosses a given depth--called a fathom curve.
