Seas that come from either side of a boat; Compare to following sea [Top of Page] [Bottom of Page] beam wind A wind which blows athwart a vessel's fore-and-aft line bear 1.

It may be remarked that steering a yacht under these conditions, in a strong and puffy breeze with a lumpy, following sea, calls for the best work of the ablest helmsman.

The poop is the stern section of a ship. To be pooped is to be swamped by a high, following sea.

Scudding before a gale (Fig. 68), distribute oil from the bow by means of oil-bags or through waste-pipes ; it will thus spread aft and give protection both from quartering and following seas.

Most yachts launch their dinghies by hand, or with a simple lifting tackle rigged from the main mast. Davits over the transom are convenient and look good, but sailing in a heavy following sea can cause the loss of a dinghy.

To be pooped is to be swamped by a high, following sea. A Bermuda rigged sailboat will always warn her crew when she is turning around 160 degrees away from the wind.

HEADING: The direction in which a vessel's bow points at any given time.
HEADWAY: The forward motion of a boat. Opposite of sternway.
