Forward: the forward is at, or in the direction of the bow; also the fore part of the ship.

 


Forward in straight line: both engines forward - wheel centered
Back in straight line: both engines back - wheel centered
Steer to starboard: PORT engine forward, STARBOARD engine back - wheel centered or to starboard.

Forward of the cockpit there is another head to port and a large dinette to starboard. The galley is forward of the head and adjacent to a nav station to starboard. The forward leg of the dinette seat provides the seat for the nav station.

Forward Quarter Spring Line
A mooring line running forward from the stern of the boat. The forward quarter spring line prevents the boat from moving backward while moored. The after bow spring line does the opposite.

Forward
At, near or towards the bow or front of a vessel or an aircraft.
Forwarder
The party arranging the carriage of goods including connected services and/or associated formalities on behalf of a shipper or consignee.
Synonym: Freight Forwarder.

The forward end of the boom attaches to a mast just below the sail, with a joint called the gooseneck. The gooseneck pivots allowing the other end of the boom to move freely. The clew (back corner) of the sail attaches to the free end of the boom.

Luff: The forward edge of a mainsail or jib and the windward edge of a spinnaker.
Luff, to: Bubbling or flapping of a sail when it is not trimmed enough or is being backwinded by another sail or when the course sailed is too close to the wind.

stem - The forward edge of the bowbow. On a wooden boat the stem is a single timber.

When moving forward, you can steer with either the engine handle, or with the tiller. Once underway, set the engine to the center and steer with the helm.

Moving the block forward pulls the clew downward more than back, tightening the sail's leech more than the foot. Moving the block aft pulls the clew back more than down, tightening the sail's foot more than the leach.

Cant Frames - Angled frames in the extreme forward or aft ends of a ship which form the sharp ends of the vessel's hull.
Canvas - Tightly woven cloth used for sails, awnings, covers, dodgers and biminis; slang for sails.

They serve as additional supports to prevent the masts going forward and also contribute to the lateral support, thereby assisting the shrouds.

"Forward perpendicular". This is an naval architecture term. It will usually be seen on the #2 plansheet, where the various stations are shown. This represents the end of the stem, or the last station from the transom.

AHEAD - In front of the vessel, forward; opposite of astern.
ALOFT - Above deck, usually in the rigging.
AMIDSHIPS - In or toward a boat's middle part, between the sides or between bow and stern.

Sea painter: A line leading from forward on the ship and secured to a forward inboard thwart of the boat in such a way as to permit quick release.
Seaworthy: Capable of putting to sea and able to meet sea conditions.

Bow Line - line going forward diagonally from a boat's bow to secure it.
Bow steer - To "over trim" the boat to the point where the nose
of the boat starts to steer
Breast Line - line going sideways from a boat.

sail slide: a small metal or plastic fitting often used on the forward and lower edges of a mainsail or mizzen to attach it to a track along the appropriate mast and boom. A slide may also be used on the head, luff or foot of a gaff sail.

BACKSTAY A rigging wire used to keep the mast from moving forward, as well as to vary the amount of bend in the mast.
