HYPOTHERMIA: A life-threatening condition in which the body's warming mechanisms fail to maintain normal body temperature and the entire body cools.

Hypothermia : Prolonged exposure to the cold can lower the body's core temperature producing dangerous hypothermia.

Hypothermia
If you are boating in cold water:
Dress in several layers of clothing under your PFD or wear a wetsuit or drysuit.
Learn to recognize the symptoms of hypothermia.

Avoiding Hypothermia While Sailing
While most sailing excursions are in beautiful, tropical weather, some longer trips may take you and your crew out to cooler temperatures -- especially if you are traveling at night.

Even then you want to spend just enough time in the water to cool off and not enough time for hypothermia to set in. Capsizing is the easy part.

If this accident had occurred during the winter months hypothermia would have certainly played a major role and could have claimed some or all of these crew members.

Hypothermia: A dangerous condition where the body core temperature has been lowered causing extreme shivering, loss of co-ordination, in ability to make decisions and in extreme cases, loss of conciousness and even death.

This PFD is only designed for calm water with a good chance of fast rescue. The wearer may have to hold head back to keep face out of water, which can contribute to exhaustion and hypothermia.
