KETCH: A two-masted sailboat with the smaller after mast stepped ahead of the rudder post.

 


Ketch - has two masts, the forward mast (main mast) is taller than the aft mast (mizzen). The mizzen mast is forward of the rudder post. Ketches can also be cutter rigged. The aft sail is generally just called the mizzen, not the mizzen sail.

Ketch: A two-masted sailing rig; the after [mizzen] mast is shorter than the forward [main] mast and stepped forward of the rudder post, so the mizzen sail on a ketch is relatively larger than it might be on a yawl.

Ketch

The ketch rig, being so handy, I chose in preference to that of the yawl.

This ketch rig shows a large mizzen and a bowsprit of moderate length. The SA/D is 18.19 and that's enough for good speed while not making the boat too demanding to handle. In breeze you can shorten sail on this rig by just dropping the mizzen.
