larboard - The left side. In consequence of frequent blunders occurring through "larboard" being misunderstood for "starboard" or vice versa', "port," as a distinctive sound, was introduced instead of larboard.

 


Larboard
Left. The term "Port" was used for helm commands to eliminate confusion with the similar-sounding "starboard". Eventually, the term "larboard" was completely eliminated.

Larboard - the antiquated term for Port, the left-hand side of the ship when facing forward.
Lee / Leeward - the side away from the wind, the direction towards which the wind is blowing. (See Windward.) ...

Larboard:
The original name for the left side of the vessel when facing forward. The name was changed to Port to avoid any confusion with starboard, the right side of the vessel when facing forward.

Larboard: Obsolete term for the left side of a ship. Derived from "lay-board" providing access between a ship and a quay, when ships normally docked with the left side to the wharf. Replaced by port side or port, to avoid confusion with starboard.

LARBOARD - A term synonymous with port (left side of the boat).
LATITUDE - The distance north or south of the equator measured and expressed in degrees.
LAZARETTE - A storage space in a boat's stern area.
LEE - The side sheltered from the wind.

An archaic version of the term is larboard. The term larboard, when shouted in the wind, was presumably too easy to confuse with starboard and so the word port came to replace it, referring to the side of the ship where cargo is loaded from the port.

Pinnace: There were five boats belonging to the ship: launch, pinnace, jolly-boat, larboard quarter-boat, and gig.

Port (larboard) or left side, is an abbreviation of porta il timone (carry the helm). Buoys which mark the port side of a channel are red. Starboard marks are green with sharp.

Port: The side of a boat or ship that is to your left went facing the bow. Also known as larboard.
Port Tack: Sailing with the wind coming over the port side of the boat.
Put the Helm Up: Move the tiller to windward.

Was previously known as the larboard side but this created confusion with starboard and was changed.
