A navigational light placed on a structure on land.
Lightweight anchor

Lights: Lighthouses or beacons; fixed aids to navigation that are equipped with light sources having certain prescribed characteristics.

Aid to navigation Any fixed object that a navigator may use to find his position, such as permanent land or sea markers, buoys, radio beacons, and lighthouses. Anchor locker A locker used to store the anchor rode and anchor.

Light - A lit navigational aid such as a lighthouse that can be used at night or in poor visibility.
Light List - A list of navigational lights arranged in geographical order, giving the position and characteristics.

Backstaff a navigation instrument used to measure the apparent height of a landmark whose actual height is known, such as the top of a lighthouse. From this information, the ship's distance from that landmark can be calculated.

The point with the lighthouse on it bears correct magnetic N. by W., and the point with the tree on it E. by N. You lay the parallel rules over the compass on your chart at N. by W., and work them to the lighthouse, preserving the direction.

Using a depth sounder or echo sounder can help you approach a lighthouse, marking the way to a harbor. You can use chart depths to intersect a bearing line and give yourself a fix.

bearing - The direction of an object (buoy, lighthouse, another ship) expressed either as a true bearing as shown on the chart, or as a bearing relative to the heading of the boat. Bearings can be by radar, GPS, radio or visual.

Range Lights: A set of two small lighthouses, aligned so that if a vessel lines them up, they will be guided safely into a harbour, through narrow channels.

It was invented by Robert Stevenson, for use by an 82 ton converted fishing boat, Pharos, which was used as a lightvessel between 1807 and 1810 near to Bell Rock whilst the lighthouse was being constructed. It was equipped with a 1.5 ton example.

In English Bay there is a lighthouse at Point Atkinson, buoys to mark the beaches, fixed markers for the low tide shoals at Spanish Banks and solar powered flashing beacons at the mouth of False Creek with red right returning and green to port.
