mast step - The place that supports the bottom of the mast. The mast step usually has a built in pattern fitting a matching pattern on the bottom of the mast, enabling the mast to be accurately positioned.

 


Mast Step - Fitting or construction into which the base of the mast is placed.
Master - The captain of a ship.
Masthead - The part of a mast above the hounds. To masthead is to hoist anything up to the truck, &c.

Mast Step - The fitting in the bottom of the boat in which the bottom or heel if the mast sits.
Mast Tangs - Fittings on the mast to which the forestay and shrouds attach.

Sloop. One mast stepped farther back then the cat and farther forward than the cutter's. Most pleasure crafts are sloops which carry a jib (fore) and a mainsail (aft).

A hinged on-deck mast step. It allows the mast to be lowered easily.

Mechanical advantage (or purchase) A mechanical method of increasing an applied force.

Folding mast steps. A great assist while going up the mast, and providing essential footholds while working up or on the mast.
V-berth with double bed on one side, all berths accomodating 6'. Good space to snuggle, and comfort for tall crew.

cutter: a sailboat with one mast stepped more than one third of the way aft, capable of carrying two or more sails ahead of the mast; also, a Coast Guard boat. dinghy: small open boat for sailing, rowing, etc.

Mast step: The frame on the keelson of boat (does not apply on ships) to which the heel of a mast is fitted.
Master: A term for the captain, a holdover from the days when the captain was literally, and legally, the "master" of the ship and crew.

MAST STEP A term applied to the foundation on which a mast is erected. MAST TABLE See Boom Table. MESSROOM A space or compartment where members of the crew eat their meals; a dining room.

Bettle Cat
The Beetle Cat is a 12 foot, gaff rigged, wooden sailboat first built in 1921 by the Beetle family of New Bedford, Massachusetts.

(1) A fitting for the bottom of the mast (mast step.) (2) The act of placing the foot of the mast in its step and raising the mast.
Stepped
(1) A mast that is in place is stepped. (2) Where the mast is stepped, as in keel stepped or deck stepped.

YAWL: A two-masted sailboat with the small mizzen mast stepped abaft the rudder post.
YOEMAN: A man employed in a vessel of war to take charge of a storeroom, therefore a boatswain's yeoman the man that has charge of the stores, of rigging, etc.

A small boat with the mast stepped in the right place and carrying a jib and a mainsail is, however, a very satisfactory craft, good at beating to windward as well as reaching or running.

Pivoting mast step. TABLOID CRUISER A small cruiser. THOLE One of a pair of wood or metal pins set vertically in the gunwale of a boat that serve as oar locks. TILLER A bar or handle for turning a boat rudder.
