Mercator
A type of projection of the globe used when making charts. Since the world is a sphere, it is impossible to draw accurate charts on flat paper.

Mercator Chart - Takes a globe and flattens it out so that Lat - Long lines intersect at 90°
Meridian - Line running from North to South Poles that cross the equator at right angles
Mid-Channel Marker - Red and White stripes, may have a white light ...

Mercator Projection - Method of producing a chart in which the parallels of latitude and the meridians of longitude intersect each other at right angles.
Merchant Navy - The merchant ships on the official registers of any nation.

When drawn on a Mercator chart, the rhumb line is a straight line. However the Mercator chart is a distortion of a round globe on a flat surface, so the rhumb line will be a longer course than a great circle route.

A rhumb line is a straight line on a rhumb (or Mercator) direction.
Rhumb Direction - The horizontal direction of a rhumb line, expressed as angular distance from a reference direction.

rhumb line - A straight line on a Mercator chart; a line intersecting all meridians at the same angle.
reverse sheer - Sheer the reverse of normal; the sheerline rises above the straight line from stem to stern instead of curving below.

This rhumb line is shown as a straight line on a globe or on a gnomic projection chart, but on a Mercator projection chart it is a curve. Under way, the boat makes a series of small course changes in order to stay on the route.

rhumb line the path a boat follows when sailing toward a specific point on the compass; on a Mercator chart, a straight line. run: sail with the wind aft sailing away from the wind source with the sails let out all the way.
