mizzen sail - The sail on the aft mast of a ketch or yawl rigged sailboat.
monkey fist - A large heavy knot usually made in the end of a lineheaving line to aid in accurate throwing.
moor - To attach a boat to a mooring, dock, post, anchor, etc.

 


Bonaventure - On older sailing ships, an additional lateen shaped mizzen sail carried on the fourth mast, known as a bonaventure mizzen.
Bone - Foam or spray which is thrown out under the bow of a ship when she is under way.

The mizzen mast is a great place to locate the radar, and a fully battened mizzen sail can be left up at anchor as a riding sail, keeping the boat head to wind. I don't think the Alerion will see much drive out of its 66-square-foot mizzen.

A term referring to the stern most mast on a three-masted vessel that supported a triangular shaped sail, called the Mizzen Sail. A vessel with less than three masts would have no mizzenmast at all.

Pushing the boom out in Figure 5 causes the stern to swing to port, while luffing into the wind in Figure 6 and back winding the mizzen sail accomplishes the same thing.
