Mizzen staysail

Mizzen staysail
A small sail that is sometimes placed forward of the mizzen mast.
Monohull
A boat that has only one hull, as opposed to multihull boats such as catamarans or trimarans.

mizzen staysail - A sail set "flying" from a yawl's mizenmast head to an eye bolt on deck forward of the mizenmast. Generally set with a quarterly wind.

This meant that the added sail area of the mizzen staysails and mizzen spinnakers was free of any rating penalty. In that light, you could consider the ultra-traditional-looking yawl rig as a simple aberration of a rating rule.

It is almost as weatherly as a sloop and, like the ketch, can set an easily handled mizzen staysail to increase area in light air or jog along under jib and mizzen in a blow.

The aftermost sail on a ketch or yawl. It is set on the mizzenmast. A mizzen staysail is a light sail set forward of the mizzenmast.

Both the ketch and the yawl can fly a jiblike sail between the masts called a mizzen staysail.

Mizzen staysail - Sail on a ketch or yawl, usually lightweight, set from, and forward of, the mizzen mast while reaching in light to moderate air.
