oarlock - A device to attach oars to a rowboat, allowing the operator to row rather than paddle the boat.
observed position - A position or fix determined by observing landmarks or other objects to find the position.

 


oarlock - A pivoting device for oars; may be U-shaped or O-shaped.
off - The opposite to near (which see), as "Off the wind.

Oars are different than paddles because they have a provision to be secured to the rowboat for rowing, such as an oarlock.

Usually there is one set of oarlocks for each thwart (seat). Sliding thwarts allow far more powerful rowing. A removable thwart can permit standing rowing. A sculling oar can substitute for several oars on a dinghy normally moved by other power.
