Propeller shaft
The spinning shaft from the engine to which the propeller is attached.
Prow
The part of the bow forward of where it leaves the waterline.

SHAFT ALLEY A watertight passage, housing the propeller shafting from the engine room to the bulkhead at which the stern tube commences.

TAIL SHAFT - The extreme section at the aft end of a ship's propeller shaft.
TANK-BARGE - A river barge designed for the carriage of liquid bulk cargoes.

INBOARD ENGINE: An engine mounted inside the hull, connected to the propeller by a propeller shaft.
(IN) IRONS: Boat is pointing into the wind, sail is flapping and probably also going backwards.
J ...

Tail shaft: The after section of the propeller shaft.
Take a turn: To pass a turn around a belaying pin or cleat.
Take in: To lower and furl the sails.

The Stuffing Box: The propeller shaft leaves the engine's transmission and exits the sailboat's hull through a fitting called the "Stuffing Box" (red arrow in picture on the right).

In more modern installations, with more than one screw, a fitting supports each propeller shaft just ahead of its screw.

Boss - The swell of a ship's hull around the propeller shaft.
Boss Plate - A curved plate covering (one on each side) the boss of a propeller post and the curved portion of frames in way of the stern tube of a screw steamer.

stuffing box - A fitting around the propeller shaft to keep the bearing lubricated and to keep water out of the boat.

Sumlog (Knotmeter) - Electronic boat speedometer that also gives distance covered
Swamp - To fill with water ...

alley - The channel made in the after part of a steamship for the propeller shaft is termed the shaft alley. The passage under the bridge deck of a steamer is an alley, or alleyway. (See "Lane.") ...

A heavy longitudinal timber placed over the keel in a ship's stern through which the propeller shaft passes. (back)
shoal
