Quartering Sea - Winds and waves on a boat's quarter
Quartermaster - An able-bodied seamen entrusted with the steering of a vessel when entering or leaving a harbor. He is also involved with the use and upkeep of navigational equipment.

A quartering sea (quartering wind) is from abaft the beam but not directly astern. A buoy or other object off the boat that is lying between abeam and astern and on the starboard (port) side is described as being on the starboard (port) quarter.
