radio beacon - A navigational aid that emits radio waves for navigational purposes. The radio beacon's position is known and the direction of the radiobeacon can be determined by using a radio direction finder.

radio beacon - A transmitter that is located at a fixed location, thus enabling vessels to determine their position.
radio bearing - A direction determined by radio.

Aid to navigation Any fixed object that a navigator may use to find his position, such as permanent land or sea markers, buoys, radio beacons, and lighthouses. Anchor locker A locker used to store the anchor rode and anchor.

EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) These beacons are used to send distress signals. There are two types of beacons the 121.5/243 MHz and the 406 MHz beacons.

Short for Emergency Position Indicator Radio Beacon, an EPIRB is the last line of defense in the event of a capsizing or sinking. An automatic digital 406 MHz EPIRB begins transmitting a signal to the Coast Guard when it is submerged in water.

A large maritime navigational aid providing a platform for light and radio beacons
A lifebuoy with flags used on yachts and smaller pleasure craft
A temporary marker buoy used during Danish seine fishing to mark the anchor position of a net.

EPIRB: Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon. There are two types of beacon. One is a transmitter that all commercial vessels are required to have on board. Pleasure crafts are recommended to carry one.

EPIRB - Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons, or EPIRB's, are used when a ship is in distress, to emit a radio signal marking the ship's location.
