reef knot - Also known as the square knot. This knot is an unreliable knot used to loosely tie lines around the bundles of sail that are not in use after reefing.

It is always used to tie the reef points of a sail. First make an overhand knot and then pass the ends so that they take the same lay as the crossed parts of the overhand knot.

Square Knot (also known as Reef Knot): The most common way to bind together two ends of rope to enclose an object. It can also be used to tie together two lines of equal size, but is known to slip if used on ropes of unequal diameter.

Lower the main halliard a bit, and secure the reef points under the boom using of course, Reef Knots! (a). Don't pull them so tight that they can't slide along the boom.

The Square/Reef Knot All kinds of purposes: To tie something down or for tying to lines together. Lines must be roughly the same size (thickness).

The excess sail material may be secured to the foot with light lines (reef points). A flattening reef is a very small reef taken to flatten the bottom part of the sail. To shake out a reef is to take it out. A reef knot is a square knot.
