roller reefing - A system of reefing a sail by partially furling it. Roller furling systems are not necessarily designed to support roller reefing.

 


roller reefing - Reduction of sail area, by rolling it around a stay, the mast, or winding the sail on a rotating boom.
rolling - The transverse, or sideways rocking, motions of a ship when amongst waves.

Roller reefing - Reduces the area of a sail by rolling it around a stay, the mast, or the boom. Most common on headsails.

In roller reefing, the sail is either rolled around a wire at its luff or lowered, a few feet and rolled around the boom.

Sometimes, in roller reefing, a sail is rolled around a wire at its huff or lowered a few feet and rolled around the boom. The time to try to sailreef is not when the wind is rising but in a well designed sailing course.

A slot into which the bolt rope or lugs in the luff of the sail are inserted to attach the sail. Most masts and roller reefing jibs use sail tracks. Systems with 2 tracks can allow for rapid sail changes.
