Sail track

Boating Sail shapeSail trim

sail track - A slot into which the bolt rope or lugs in the luff of the sail are inserted to attach the sail. Most masts and roller reefing jibs use sail tracks. Systems with 2 tracks can allow for rapid sail changes.

Sail track
Groove that runs the length of the aft side of the mast and the top side of the boom. The boltrope, sewn to the luff and foot of the mainsail, is fed into the track to hold the sail to the mast and boom.
Screw pin shackle ...

SAIL TRACKS A device fitted on the after side of a mast in which slides, secured to the forward edge of a fore-and-aft sail, travel up and down the mast as the sail is hoisted or lowered; used in lieu of mast hoops.

Some masts have an external sail track.
Mast Step - The fitting in the bottom of the boat in which the bottom or heel if the mast sits.
Mast Tangs - Fittings on the mast to which the forestay and shrouds attach.

Passionate racers can opt for a carbon fiber mast, low-friction, car-to-mainsail track system for the main and other go-fast features. There is even a package for singlehanders with a carbon fiber mast, electric winches and a self-tacking jib.

If the boat swings broadside to the wind, which might happen if you raise the jib first, the mainsail will fill with wind, press against the rigging, and bind on the sail track, making it virtually impossible to raise the sail farther.
