Square Knot
The square knot (or sailor's knot) is used to temporarily connect two ropes of the same diameter. It is used when the line is under constant but not extreme tension.

Square Knot (also known as Reef Knot): The most common way to bind together two ends of rope to enclose an object. It can also be used to tie together two lines of equal size, but is known to slip if used on ropes of unequal diameter.

A mistied square knot. It will slip.

square knot: a utility knot that is made of two overhand knots and used for binding together two ends of a line or joining two lines of equal size when the strain on either line is not great. Also called a reef knot.

Functionally different from a square knot in that it can be used between lines of different diameters.
SHIP - A larger vessel usually used for ocean travel. A vessel able to carry a "boat" on board.

The square knot is perhaps the most useful and common knot. Do not use the square knot to tie together lines of different sizes, as it will slip. The knot has one serious fault. It jams and is difficult to untie after being heavily stressed.

short lines with square knots. Settle the coil in a stable and dry location and remove the stops. Then secure the bitter end to the bow cleat (or other secure attachment) and the other end to the anchor.
