Small linear protrusions that run longitudinally on both sides of the keel to give a planing hull lift and lateral stability.

Internal beams and braces that give a fiberglass hull structural support.

 


strakes - Lines of planking.
strand - Yarns twisted together and they then make the parts or strands of a rope.

LIFT STRAKES Longitudinal members running fore and aft on the outside bottom of the hull. The purpose is to stabilize and create lift on a deep vee hull when under power.

CEILING, HOLD Thick strakes of planking fastened to the inside flanges or edges of the framing in the cargo holds. CENTER LINE The middle line of the ship from stem to stern as shown in any water line view.

Refers to the planks, or strakes, on either side of and adjacent to the keel.
Gollywobbler A full, quadrilateral sail used in light air on schooners. It is flown high, between the fore and main mast, and is also known as a fisherman's staysail.

A strip of wood, fiberglass, or metal on the outside of the hull. On the topsides, rubbing strakes rub against wharves or other boats to prevent the sides from being scratched.

Garboard - Used in conjunction with strake. Refers to the planks, or strakes, on either side of and adjacent to the keel.
Give-Way Vessel - A term used to describe the vessel which must yield in meeting, crossing, or overtaking situations.

The lowest part of a hull next to the keel. The planks each side of the keel are the 'garboard strakes'.

Ties used to tie up the sails when they are furled.

Open cracks 1/8 inch wide were covered in this manner, and also cracks at the butts of the strakes.
