Alkaline soil - Bonsai soil having a ph rating over 7.0.
Apex - The topmost part of the tree, also called the crown.

Pomegranate juice will turn blue when subjected to basic (ie alkaline) conditions (similar to litmus paper).
Although not native to China, Korea or Japan, the pomegranate is widely grown there and many cultivars have been developed.
Some trees prefer acid soils with a ph below 7, whilst other thrive in alkaline conditions with a ph above 7. If it is known that a tree likes acid soil, peat may be added to the soil mix.

Acid and alkaline soils are not a problem for it. It can tolerate hot, dry weather and also hot and cold winds. It grows slowly, but strong; and can achieve great age, as it can resprout from its trunk, even if you cut or burn it.
Yellow leaves are a sign of an alkaline soil and an acid-based feed should help green up the foliage. Aphids can occasionally be a problem. The main pests to be aware of are scale insects, particularly around flowering time.

Notes: The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very acid and very alkaline soils. It can grow in full shade (deep woodland) semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.
There are a few exceptions where alkaline or acidic soil is preferable but just ensure to research the requirements of your tree before you start!
SUN AND SHADE
As you would already be well aware of, trees will not grow without sunlight.

They have no special needs but tend to do better in a alkaline (lime) soil rather than a peat based compost.
pH is a measure of a solution's acidity or alkalinity. Aqueous solutions with pH values lower than 7 are considered acidic, while pH values higher than 7 are considered alkaline. Most substances have a pH in the range 0 to 14.

Calcium Calcium is used to build the cell walls it also makes phosphorus and potassium more available to the plant. Don't over use it on acid loving plants like azaleas, it will make the soil alkaline.
Repotting: The tree needs annual repotting and may be severely root pruned. Not particular about the type of soil, however it should be well drained and slightly alkaline.
