Ivy has alternate 3-5 lobed or entire leaves in a variety of colours. Ivy shows two distinct stages of growth. In the juvenile climbing stage, Ivy produces adventitious rootlets, lobed leaves and minute hairy young shoots.

1. Leaves alternate on the stem.

2. In a side view the leaves are arranged in a flat plane.

If you prefer to use chemical fertilizers, apply a half-strength solution every other week of a reasonably balanced fertilizer, such as Peter's 20-20-20. You may wish to alternate with an acidic fertilizer such as Miracid.

Leaf quality is generally hereditary. If you do not like curly or withering leaves,
you should avoid trees with such leaves.
