Back budding
A process of encouraging new growth on a branch where growth is
currently non-existent.
Broadleaved
Trees, mainly deciduous, with broad, flat leaves; non-conifer trees.

"Back budding" on leggy branches is easy to achieve. Right after early spring fertilization, cut the branch back to a pair of strong shoots and then expose the tree to some warm sunlight.

Any new back budding that occurs further back along the branch will be relatively fragile and dislodged easily. Take great care of them until they strengthen over the following 2 or 3 years.

Severe Reduction
Back budding on old wood is reliable and consistent so large reductions cuts are feasible.

pinching the candles on pine trees once they are fully extended will result in back budding and compact growth. It is worth taking out the dominant central shoot, to allow more strength to be channeled into the weaker side shoots.

A by-product of pinching-out is 'back budding'. Removal of the apical shoots will stimulate buds within the areas circled to develop into new shoots.

They stimulate side branching and back budding with slower growth. Auxin is the dominant growth regulator.

It is a method to try and stimulate back budding. All shoots should be allowed to grow throughout the growing season. In autumn all the current seasons growth is removed, leaving only the previous years needles.

Leave only 2 or three new shoots at each node whorls, in the directions that you would like your branches to grow. Root pruning normally encourages a lot of back budding on older wood.

This is achieved by breaking off most of the emerging candle, do not cut it as this will damage the tips of the new needles and spoil the look of the tree. Again this will cause side buds and some back budding, ...

You can fertilize bonsai a little more often as the soil is more porous and it gets depleted faster (There's less of it supporting the plant than normal garden situations). Regular fertilization will cause back budding and help fill in the foliage, ...
