Basal trunk flare develops most rapidly in plants created from air layers, while cuttings are slower in developing root buttress. Certain fig species, F. palmeri, F.

 


Propagation: Basal cuttings from side shoots in early to mid-Summer and root with bottom heat. Ground layer in Autumn or air-layer after flowering.
Pests and Diseases: Leafspot, brown scale and aphids might be a problem.

Is capable of producing good basal rootage and excellent aerial root formation in humid conditions. Has a habit of dropping leaves if stressed so should be kept in ideal growing conditions.

Most trees grow stronger at the top then the bottom, however, some are basally dominant. It is important to study the species of tree you are using for your bonsai, and to establish if it has any natural growth imbalance.

hastate: shaped like an halberd and with the basal lobes pointing outward.
oblique: slanting.
reniform: kidney-shaped but rounder and broader than long.
rounded: curving shape.

Notes: Its nut-bracts have a basal node on one side only. Nutlets are 2 cm. to 4 cm.

It is an evergreen succulent shrub, growing to 3mtrs in height, with pachycaul stems and a stout, swollen basal caudex.
