Birch is the name of any tree of the genus Betula (Bé-tu-la), in the family Betulaceae, closely related to the beech/oak family, Fagaceae. These are generally small to medium-size trees or shrubs, mostly of northern temperate climates.
Birch (quite rightly) have a reputation for unexplained dieback and loss of branches; this can badly spoil a well designed tree. Try to style the tree with many branches so the loss of one will not affect the overall design.
