Bleeding: The loss of sap caused by wounding or pruning.

Clip to shape at any time, however, large branches should be cut during the dormant season when sap is down to prevent bleeding. If you must cut a larger branch during the growing season, cut paste should be applied to the cut.

Pruning : Branch pruning can be done in late fall or winter to reduce sap bleeding from the wound. After cutting off the branch, reduce the cut around the edges with a sharp knife or chisel and seal with a putty cut paste.

Spring 2010: with all but one of the grafts having taken, I removed all traces of the original saplings and sealed the wounds (pruning Acer species during the Spring can result in bleeding or sap loss and I prefer to use wound healer to prevent this).

Ginkgo side effects and cautions include: possible increased risk of bleeding, gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, dizziness, heart palpitations, and restlessness.

Heavy pruning should not be carried out in the spring because maples are susceptible to profuse bleeding which can have a detrimental effect on the tree.

Ficus Ginseng trees are usually pruned with dull instruments in order to prevent excessive bleeding. When your Ficus Ginseng has about ten leaves, prune about six to eight of them off. You won't need to prune the roots until it's time for repotting.

- When branches become uncontrollable, use a dull pruning implement as opposed to sharp to avoid sap bleeding. Prune branches and leave around one third.

Frost-sensitive plants should get NO pruning after mid-October or so. Do drastic pruning in February for most trees, maples by the end of January to avoid excessive bleeding of rising sap.
