Introduction
Styling in bonsai refers to the 'form' of the work, such Cascade, Slanting, Formal or Informal Upright. It can also be used to describe the particular the type of representation.
As with most bonsai styles, the bonsai artist attempts to emulate nature, even in this extreme case.
Many of the results are as spectacular as the full-sized examples produced by nature alone.
As with a few Bonsai styles the Yose style offers a few sub-designs referenced by the amount of Bonsais present in the pot.
Most books that discuss bonsai styles and forms will tell you that there are 5 basic styles. These are the formal upright, the informal upright, slanting or windswept, cascade and semi cascade.

Bonsai Styles, some pointers
The problem with providing a set of styles for folk who are new to the hobby is that it is easy to lead them to believe that, if their tree doesn't conform to one of the styles, it's a bad bonsai, when it's not!.
BONSAI STYLES
As far as I know, historically, there were 3 styles of bonsai: Upright, slanted, and cascade. Over time these styles were refined into 2 additional styles: Informal-upright, and Semi-cascade.
How Bonsai Styles Effect Potting
Before potting a tree for bonsai in any of the styles, keep in mind the image of how the tree will stand in the container. Don't plant a tree one way, and then uproot it to make a change.
In most bonsai styles a stable root system is necessary and very desirable.

The chokkan bonsai typically has a single, upright trunk that tapers toward the top, branches are symmetrically balanced and well spaced.
