Anyone who is new to growing bonsai will not go far wrong with a Chinese elm bonsai tree. Its growth pattern is predictable and it is easy to prune and shape as a bonsai.

While there are many excellent tree species for bonsai, the Chinese Elm lands near the top. This particular tree is native to East Asia and can grow outdoors up to 60 feet tall.

Overview : Native to East Asia, the Chinese Elm (Ulmus Parvifolia) grows to 18 m (60 ft) tall and has a spreading, sinuous habit and bark mottled with dark gray, reddish brown and cream.

Chinese Elm or Ulmus parviflora are in my opinion one of the best plants someone new to bonsai can experiment with. They will grow indoors, although I wouldn't recommend this unless you are very careful.

General Information: Chinese elm is fast growing, deciduous or evergreen depending on its location, forms a graceful upright rounded canopy with shiny, dark green leathery leaves. elm is moderatly salt tolerant.

Ulmus species and in particular Ulmus parvifolia/Chinese Elm are often confused with Zelkova species, in particular Zelkova serrata/Japanese Elm.

The Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) Is a very easy tree to grow. Deciduous in temporate areas, it may retain its leaves in tropical and sub tropical regions. The Chinese elm is often wrongly sold as an indoor tree here in Europe and probably elseware.

This is a Chinese Elm, and I am intended to grow this tree into the semi-cascade style. In fact, to be more specific, I want to cultivate this Chinese Elm into a "--捞月" (literally means scooping the moon from the ocean).

the Chinese Elm, is a species of elm native to China, Japan, North Korea and Vietnam. [1] It is a small to medium-sized deciduous, semi-deciduous (rarely semi-evergreen) tree growing to 10-18 m tall with a slender trunk and crown.

Subtropicals such as Chinese elms, Ulmus parvifolia, have little if any dormancy requirements. In colder areas they drop their leaves, go dormant and act like deciduous trees.

Structural pruning can be carried out, but avoid large branch removal, at this stage, on Chinese elms which will later callous badly, or on pines and spruce, as resin will bleed from the wound and stain the bark.

Also my big Chinese Elm which has provided me with some nice seedlings makes a few suckers. I just dug up a fat one. The seedlings may well do the same. Thanks in advance for your advice, Lisa Kanis. lkanis@dynamite.com.au

For deciduous trees, such as Maples, the Chinese Elm or others, scissor tip pruning is best. Trim the new shoots back to your imagined point based on the sketch.

Some common varieties include Japanese Maples, Chinese Elms, Junipers, and Serissa, to name a few.

A "broom" style of bonsai. Usually featuring a very straight trunk with symmetrical branches that fan out from the top, forming a broom-like (semicircular dome) crown. Frequently seen on Chinese Elm and other finely branched deciduous trees.

Represented are traditional Asian bonsai subjects such as Japanese maple and Chinese elm; tropical plants such as willow-leaf fig and powderpuff; and American species such as baldcypress and limber pine.
