Concave cutters: a bonsai tool used to remove branches with a flush or slightly depression cut. C oncave cutters are one of the most important bonsai tools you can own.

 


Concave cutter: Removes small to medium sized branches very close to the trunk. Leaves no "nubs". Cuts heal quickly and smoothly. Knob cutter (spherical): Makes deeper cut than the concave branch cutter.

Concave cutters are essential to shaping the bonsai tree. A concave cutter is the single most important tool for bonsai use and for which there is no substitute.
They are used to remove branches and produce a concave wound.

Concave cutters are very tricky to sharpen. Before beginning, look closely at how they are made and ground. The edges will have to mate EXACTLY or they won't work properly.

Pruning thick branches will result in creating ugly scars on the tree, but by using a special concave cutter you will reduce this effect significantly because of the indentation it makes when cutting off the branch.

There is a concave cutter, a leaf trimmer, a wire cutter, a knob cutter, a rake with spatula, coir brush, a root hook, and some small, medium, and large shears. The concave cutter is the most common of bonsai tools and is used on larger branches.

As a teacher, it is difficult to deal with this issue when you have one or two students out of ten that don't know a concave cutter from a ham sandwich. The teacher can approach this on several levels, none of which is optimal.

Pruning should be done with a concave cutter, a special bonsai tool for making sharp cuts without collars (stubs).

Concave cutters, knob cutters and root cutters have fairly complex blade geometry which makes proper sharpening beyond the capability of most bonsai artists and most professional sharpeners as well.

When heavier branches are removed, we call it pruning and the tool to use is the concave cutter, for which there is no substitute. The concave cutter allows you to remove small, medium and even large branches without leaving any visible scars.

The most common tool is the concave cutter, a tool designed to prune flush, without leaving a stub. Other tools include branch bending jacks, wire pliers and shears of different proportions for performing detail and rough shaping.

This is the way you will shape your procumbens juniper after your initial cutting with bonsai scissors and usually concave cutters for thicker branches. These next two pictures shows two examples of these tools.
