Notes: The cones are berry-like, globose to ovoid, 4-9 mm long and 4-6 mm diameter, glossy black, and contain one seed; they are mature in about 18 months.

 


A pine cone for instance has 3+5=8 spirals in one direction and 5+8=13 spirals in the other.

Conifers (cone-bearing trees such as pines or cypresses) can be a good seed to use for your first bonsai. These trees generally require less oversight of moisture levels in the soil. There are two extremes of soil moisture, soggy and bone-dry.

I tried to replicate natures work by letting the cone sit all winter in a cold wet environment outside, in a pail of damp soil.

As the branch structure ascends, they taper assuming a somewhat cone-like form.

It is differentiated from its western cousin (Thuja orientalis) by its smaller size, prominent resin glands, slight differences in cone morphology, and its un-winged seeds.

Every year I try to raise bald cypress from seeds matured on near-by trees, but only one or two seedlings come up from all the seeds contained in a cone.

The photos show the tree in leaf and in winter, as although larch are conifers (cone bearing) it is deciduous and so you get a totally different but beautiful winter image, together with the autumn yellow leaf colour.

The branches should be continually pruned back to a diameter a little greater than the can and into a cone, to maintain proper branch proportion. All of these low branches will help develop good trunk size and taper.
